PLASTICS ... We drink out of them, eat off them, use them for a nano-second and throw them away. They are durable, lightweight, convenient, and can be made into virtually anything. BUT, these useful properties of plastics are what make them so harmful when they end up in the environment. Only 6.8% of municipal plastic waste gets properly recycled in the U.S. About 63 pounds of plastic packaging per person per year ends up in landfills in the United States. In the ocean, broken, degraded plastic pieces outweigh surface zooplanton in some areas of the North Pacific by more than 6 to 1. Our consumption habits are a big part of the problem. Common sense choices can make all the difference. Remember... REDUCE, REUSE, REFUSE.
